This Week – Nov. 6th

Congratulations to the Hamilton and New York Runners!

Hope you ran well in New York Shana, looking forward to your stories. And Hamilton…..brutal! Pouring and driving rain at the start, and what about that hard 20 km wind! It sure wore you down, but we finished.

Now a brief lull between the big races.

We have the Egg Nog Jog coming up Dec 10. Guess what, it’s SOLD OUT. We do have 18 Benders registered. Way to go! We can all still enjoy the event, either as Runners or Cheering Section.

Be sure to come out to the Running Room in Bramalea this Wednesday for a group run as we will be presenting ALS Canada with the cheque of the funds raised from the Don Doan Dash 5K in September. Wear your Don Doan shirts!

This week:

  • Tuesday – 6:30 – Tim’s at Shoppers World – 6K
  • Wednesday – 6:30 – Running Room Bramalea – 6-8K
  • Thursday – 6:30 – Chris Gibson 8K – or join in with Maria’s Fitness class at 6:30 at St.Rita school.
  • Sunday – It’s time to go to Terra Cotta, for the practice run and bring some treats for afterwards.

A Letter of Thanks – from Don Doan

Sharing a fantastic letter from Don Doan about the Don Doan Dash.

Email from Don Doan – Sept 11, 2017

This Week – Sept. 11th

Thank you all again for helping us put on a great race on Sunday. We needed help in many areas to make the event work, and we got so many helpful and enthusiastic volunteers.

And a thank you to Samantha from The Benders, for taking on the task of race director, “Job well done!” The tireless planning and organizing of our team over the last several months.

So glad to see Don and Pam too!

Well done, congratulations to Steve on his completion of the 100 miler in Woodstock Michigan. Yes, another 100 miles. He’s a machine.

And congratulations to Mike B. and his team. They participated in the Ragnar relay Friday all night till Saturday morning, and he still managed to get to our race in time to help organize volunteers.

Promoting Don Doan Dash 5k

The Brampton Bender promotional machine is up running. This past Wednesday saw Rob and Grace at Square One Running Room and Ivar & Sam at the Winston Churchill store. Spreading the word on the Don Doan Dash. Benders will be visiting neighboring Running Room in the coming weeks to let everyone know about the awesome race we’ve planned and hoping everyone will come out and make it a real special event.

Want to help out promoting this event?

  •  Run with another group or store? (Running Free, MEC or different Running Room)
    • Ask the manager if you can do a quick two minute pitch before the group fun run.
    • Don’t like speaking in front of groups but still want them to know about it – Contact Sam and a Bender will help
  • Post the Flyer for the run (see Sam for copies)
    • Rec Center
    • Sporting good store
    • Community Center
    • Any place runners might see and be interested.
  • Bring in it up in conversation whenever you find yourself in a group of 2 or more people
    • People never get sick of hearing about running and race stuff 😉
  • If someone asks you why I should run the Don Doan Dash 5k
    • Free Technical T-Shirt
    • Finishers Medal
    • Timed Event
    • Supporting ALS
    • Supporting Brampton running community
    • Oh…and it’s going to be fun!

This Week – July 10th

Annual General Meeting aka BBQ Pool Party

The first official sign of summer happened this past weekend, I’m of course talking about the annual reading of the financial standing of The Brampton Benders. Nothing says summer like the itemization of revenues and expenses. Sun’s out…Balance sheets out! It looks like the Benders are still in the black, which is a surprise to no one as our latest and 80th member David joined to celebrate another fantastic year for the club.

A group of 20+ members set off to get in their long slow run for the week (a pool party is no reason to miss your long run). Several distances ranging from 12k to 20k were completed as groups headed up the Chinguacousy Trail and then headed east before turning south and looping back to the Don Doan Trail around Professors Lake (Home of the Don Doan Dash) before finishing back to Plodder Paul’s. Overcast skies kept things relatively cool and easy as everyone finished up looking strong.

After everyone returned, the most important task of re-hydration began! Cheers! The Annual General Meeting proceeded as more members and families trickled in. Everyone bringing their delicious treats and the grill heating up, the meeting seemed to progress faster then the previous executive meetings held throughout the year. This organization was organized (and possibly hungry!). Burgers, hot dogs, samosas, salads and all kinds of fantastic food were heaped on everyone’s plates as everyone dug in.

Some highlights:

  • Samantha G. steps down as Vice President and assumes new role and sole focus Race Director…woo!
  • Jacki W. is elected the New Vice President. Yay! Jacki!
  • Bramptonbenders.com has been brought back from the dead (or 2014)
  • The Don Doan Dash – Sept. 10th. Closing in on 100 registered participants. Don’t miss out – Register HERE!

Reloaded and ready to party the pool was open and the music was on. This party was in full swing. Brand new Bender apparel made it just in time to be handed out. Did you get your new Black Bender Jacket or amazing Hoodie? There might be some extras still available and if not, the Bender’s store will be back open in the fall (details will come in the weekly email update).

Next up – Bender Golf Day – check the emails for details.

As always a super big thanks goes out to Plodder Paul and his family for the generous use of their backyard, pool, and BBQ. Can’t wait to do it all again next year!
